COUNTRY HOUSE RESCUE

Country House Rescue (working title) is a new programme for Channel Four, made by Betty, an independent television production company based in London. It has been commissioned by the Features department of C4, whose programme roster includes Grand Designs and Jamie's School Dinners. They have asked us to make 6 hour-long, primetime shows which should be transmitted next autumn on Sunday nights at 8.00pm.The series will follow six diverse country houses over a six month period. Each will be putting into practice advice they will receive from a renowned business person, who has themselves successfully stewarded a number of historic houses.

We are looking for different types of property around the country, which need to raise revenue in order to maintain or renovate. Channel 4 have decided to make this series now as there's clearly a real problem with the huge expense of maintaining historic houses and all the attending issues. We believe that it's vital these houses get the support they need and hope that the advice the owners receive will help keep these wonderful buildings in good hands and good repair.

While we don't have the budget to undertake any renovation work ourselves (and given that the process would take much longer than our six month schedule), there are considerable benefits to taking part in this programme. Expert advice will be tailored to each individual property, taking into account the owners wishes and the specifics of each situation. We're aiming to come up with innovative ways of diversifying that fit each property's individual requirement. Most importantly, a primetime programme on a Sunday night could bring these houses to the attention of millions of potential visitors to the estate. The public interest generated could make a huge difference to each houses fortune.

Ideally, we are looking for places that have yet to start down the road of diversification, but we are happy to consider properties that have started the process. The key is that owners must be open to the idea of how their home can work as a business and be willing to explore ways to achieve this goal.

Filming will begin in February, 2008. With a crew of five people, we would need to spend approximately ten days at each property, over a six month period.  Our intention is to make a beautiful film about these stunning properties, as well as an enlightening and interesting programme about diversification and business. It's vital that everyone involved is happy and willing to be part of the filming process. It can be a little daunting at first, but the film crew are extremely professional, polite and respectful. They will all do their best to make it an enjoyable experience and make people feel at ease.

If you would like to find out more about this project, we would be delighted to visit you and discuss things in greater detail.
