CLA Centenary Rural Buildings Award for Puttenham farmyard conversionThe CLA's centenary award for best building conversion in the South East Region, sponsored by Knight Frank, has been won by Shoelands Farm Offices, on the Hampton Estate at Puttenham. The winner's plaque was presented to Sir Richard Thornton of Hampton, by the CLA South East regional director, Rupert Ashby, at a ceremony on Monday (March 3). Certificates were also presented to the architect, Garry Mount of RJCA Architects, and the builder, Dominic Marchant of Marchant and Cheale. The project manager was Peter O'Keefe of OSP.
Shoelands is a former dairy farm on the Hampton Estate at Seale built round a large yard on the southern slopes of the Hog's Back. It has been sympathetically converted into environmentally green, flexible office suites, all heated by a single wood burner using sustainable woodchip harvested from the farm estate.
The conversion won the praise of Penelope Keith CBE DL, Patron of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty who said: "I am always encouraged by examples of rural excellence which can act as inspiration for others. I am really delighted that Shoelands Farm Offices is one such example and that the CLA has chosen to award it first place in the south east in its centenary awards."
Rupert Ashby said the awards attracted a large number of entries across the country, divided into two categories: new build and conversion. These were whittled down into two shortlists of 13 and Shoelands came out on top in the conversion category.
"It was the fact you have some old buildings that have been converted very sympathetically and very thoughtfully, so that they blend in with the environment that clinched it," he said, "plus the fact that they put in a wood chip burner using natural resources from the local area, which is helping the estate to manage its woodland. Not only have you got a fantastic conversion but there is green energy from local resources running it. Our thanks go to Knight Frank for sponsoring this award"
Bill Biddell, who manages the family-owned estate, said they were all delighted with the award. "We are so pleased that what were redundant farm buildings now have a future use and it is nice to be proud of buildings rather than feel they are a drain on resources.
"It is a great boost for our woodland management and it is brilliant that natural resources from the estate are being used in a sustainable way."
