Betsey Wynne scoops rural building award

The Betsey Wynne pub in Swanbourne has won the South East New Build category in the CLA's Rural Building Award Scheme, sponsored by Knight Frank. Rupert Ashby, South East regional director of the CLA and Robert Harrison of Knight Frank Milton Keynes presented the award to Lord and Lady Cottesloe on Monday, February 4. The Betsey Wynne is sited on Lord Cottesloe's Swanbourne Estate, and was the brainchild of his son The Hon. Tom Fremantle and Swanbourne estate manager Tom Finchett.

Tom Finchett attended the presentation along with his wife Suzanne (who designed the interior of the pub), Steve Vanner and Lighann Chasney from LAP architects, Tim and Sue Shone from Shone Builders, and pub manager Jo Mutton. Betsy Duncan Smith (wife of the former Conservative leader and sister of Tom Fremantle) who supplies free range pork and eggs to the Betsey Wynne, also took part.

Rupert Ashby said: "The CLA's expertise is the rural economy, which is why we are so keen to support projects like the Betsey Wynne, which remain in keeping with countryside tradition, while stimulating the local economy. The CLA Rural Building Award Scheme is a national competition which recognizes both new builds and conversions. The Betsey Wynne is highly unusual as a new build pub in a rural area. Bearing in mind the last pub in Swanbourne closed seven years ago, the Betsey Wynne is an important new focal point for the village. I look forward to returning as a customer."

Robert Harrison of Knight Frank said: "As land agents, it's always encouraging for us to see estates like Swanbourne pursuing imaginative projects like the Betsey Wynne. The building is remarkably authentic and in-keeping with the area. The Betsey Wynne is a great achievement and a deserving winner."

Despite its youth, the Betsey Wynne is steeped in history. The pub is named after the wife of one of Lord Cottesloe's ancestors, Admiral Thomas Fremantle. Fremantle fought beside Lord Nelson, and survived to set up home in Swanbourne with Betsey.  Betsey Wynne had 10 children with Thomas Fremantle, and was a popular local figure who kept diaries of her eventful life.
