“No surprise” says CLA as Kent claims slowest broadbandNews that Railway Hill, Barham near Canterbury has the slowest broadband speed in the country came as no surprise to the CLA. Railway Hill's paltry 0.13 mbps download speed leaves residents and businesses completely out of the loop of modern communication, according to Rupert Ashby, CLA South East Regional Director. "This is not just a problem in the back of beyond" said Mr Ashby. "Many areas just outside the South East's major towns, such as Barham, where small businesses should thrive, suffer from hopelessly inadequate broadband speeds. One fifth of people living in rural areas who have no broadband access at all, but at 0.13 mbps, Railway Hill effectively has no broadband anyway. "Rural Britain is desperately in need of effective and affordable broadband, and the current situation where areas such as Barham are marginalised and have to seek costly alternative solutions, seriously compromise the ability of the rural economy to succeed in the future. "Of course we are living in straitened times. However, without universal broadband it will become far harder for rural business to compete effectively with businesses in urban areas, which typically already have access to speeds of 6 Mbps and more." The private-public partnership for which the CLA lobbied intensively has earmarked £530 million to bring all broadband users up to a minimum 2 mbps as well as setting up a new superfast broadband. The CLA will continue to argue its "Final Third First" policy, which promotes the provision of a decent broadband connection for rural "not spots" and areas with slow connections before money is spent improving the speed for those whose broadband is already at an acceptable level. |
