Local Wildlife Sites Award launchedKent Wildlife Trust has launched The Richard Neame Local Wildlife Sites Award. This new Award seeks to recognise the valuable contribution that Local Wildlife Site owners make to the rich biodiversity heritage of Kent. We know that many owners invest a lot of time and effort in managing their sites for wildlife. Local Wildlife Sites are areas which are important for the conservation of wildlife in the administrative areas of Kent and Medway. They may support threatened habitats, such as chalk grassland or ancient woodland, or may be important for the wild plants or animals which are present. In Kent, there are over 450 Local Wildlife Sites, covering a total area of over 27000 ha (67500 ac) - roughly 7% of the county. They range from a 0.13 ha (0.3 ac) churchyard important for its orchids, to grazing marsh sites of over 1000 ha (2500 ac). Local Wildlife Sites (formerly known as Sites of Nature Conservation Interest, or SNCIs) are under a range of ownerships, including private individuals, local councils and businesses. Sites are identified by the Kent Biodiversity Steering Group through reference to a clear set of criteria. More information can be found here, including where to find more advice and assistance with the management of a Local Wildlife Site. The Richard Neame Local Wildlife Sites Award is free to enter and open to anyone who owns all or part of a Local Wildlife Site in Kent, regardless of how small an area. Every entrant will receive a certificate at either Gold, Silver or Bronze level. The certificate each landowner receives will be determined by the management they are carrying out to maintain, protect and/or enhance their Local Wildlife Site and the surrounding landscape. More details are on the entry form which can be downloaded below. The overall winner will be awarded £1000 to be used to further enhance their Local Wildlife Site for wildlife. Kent Wildlife Trust hopes that those who provide land management advice across the county will recommend this Award to those Local Wildlife Site owners they support and facilitate their entry to the Richard Neame Local Wildlife Site Award. The Richard Neame Local Wildlife Sites Award has been divided into three categories reflecting differences in land ownership: Farming The Farming category of the Award is open for entry, and the deadline for completed entries is 31 March 2012. The other two categories of the Award (Commercial & Local Authorities and Private Individuals) are expected to be open for entry in July 2012, when the Farming category will also again be open to enter.
