Amnesty for revoked or out of date pesticidesThose in possession of pesticides which have recently been revoked or are out of date have been reminded by the Campaign Against Accidental or Illegal Poisoning (CAIP) that they have until 31 March 2009 to dispose of them without fear of prosecution. Gamekeepers encouraged to use pesticide amnesty to get rid of illegal and unwanted products without fear of prosecution. The Public Health Pesticide Disposal Scheme which has been running from the start of 2009 is supported by both the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) and the British Pest Control Association (BPCA). Oliver Madge, BPCA CEO, said: "Once the scheme has closed you will be exposed to the full force of the law. It is vital that you take this opportunity to dispose of out of date and revoked products as there will not be another opportunity like this again." The scheme came about after the industry agreed to a concerted drive to rid pest control stores of pesticide products that have lapsed approvals for UK use or are simply out of date. "This is a great chance to clear out those products that are very quietly sitting in your pesticide stores without fear of prosecution," added Mr Madge. "Pesticides that are out of date or recently revoked due to the requirements of the Biocides Product Directive are illegal to use or hold as stock." A spokesman for the National Gamekeepers' Organisation said: "This is a rare opportunity for any gamekeepers or other rural land managers to dispose of unwanted substances legitimately. The message is, look in the shed and if you have substances that are no longer wanted or no longer legal, get rid of them now." The scheme applies to pesticides that can no longer legally be used as their UK Approvals have lapsed. All other pest control waste should be disposed of as usual, by a licensed Waste Disposal contractor. Cymag and Strychnine are included in the scheme although a waste disposal contractor will need the necessary infrastructure to deal with these products safely. It is the responsibility of landowners and gamekeepers to arrange and pay for the transportation and disposal of pesticides.
