Giant hogweed - free advice on controlSpring is upon us with the grass growing nicely; unfortunately the warm weather also encourages the growth of less wanted plants. The bright green spiked growth of Giant Hogweed is now appearing along our river banks. This non native invasive plant was brought to the UK in the 1800s as an ornamental plant. It has since spread from gardens out into the wider countryside favouring wet areas along the river. The sap of Giant Hogweed is a health hazard and is detrimental to our local flora. Because of this under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) it is an offense to cause it to grow on your land. With the plant spreading by seed along the river, a coordinated approach of all landowners in looking out for and controlling this plant is needed. MVCP help landowners in its control offering free advice and where necessary practical assistance along the River Medway and its tributaries (Teise, Beult, Bourne and Eden). MVCP can be contacted for help on 01622 683695 / medwayvalley@kent.gov.uk |
