New Chairman of the Farming & Rural Issues GroupThe Farming & Rural Issues Group, which represents the majority of the land based organizations operating within the South East, elected Andrew Colquhoun to take over from Shaun Leavey as their new Chairman at their meeting on 19 March. The Group also heard a detailed presentation from Jacqui Middleton of SEEDA about the progress of RDPE within the South East.Shaun Leavey stood down after twelve years as FRIG Chairman during the last five of which the Group has managed all the region's Sector Champion projects for SEEDA, and reviewed the work on EFFP and the Fresh Start Academies for SEEDA. Sadly it looks unlikely that any of this funding will continue in 2010/11.
Andrew was Director General of the RHS from 1999 to 2006 and has since 2006 been Chairman, SEEDA Horticulture Working Group and Non-Executive Director, Executive Board, Natural Environment Research Council; Chairman, National Horticultural Forum since 2002; and Interim Chairman, shadow Horticulture Development Council, Defra (June- September 2007).
The Farming & Rural Issues Group primarily exists to represent to regional statutory bodies (GOSE, SEEDA, and SEERA) the views of the land based sector and its ancillary industries within the South East. It has operated in liaison with the Horticulture Working Group since that Group was established by SEEDA in 2006.
It was formed shortly after SEERA and SEEDA were established, and was formally recognised by both SEEDA and the Regional Office of MAFF as an authoritative voice of the region's land based industries. The Defra team within GOSE subsequently gave the Group formal recognition from the time that the Department was created.
The Group has operated in liaison with the Horticulture Working Group since that Group was established by SEEDA in 2006.
The Group was invited to present evidence to the SE Plan EIP in 2006, and its views on proactive management of urban fringe land were accepted within the final report. In addition it has since 2005 managed SEEDA's Sector Champion projects – for which it initially developed the concept – and reviews the work of English Food & Farming Partnership and Fresh Start.
