CLA backs NFU milk campaign

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is backing the NFU's campaign for British dairy farmers to receive a fair price for milk.

CLA South East Acting Director Tim Brock said: "The CLA supports the efforts of the NFU to highlight the crisis facing many dairy farmers across Britain.

"The price paid for milk by certain retailers and processors is below the cost of production. It is anti-competitive and insulting to the farmers who work hard to feed the nation.

"The planned price cut on milk will force some farmers out of business so the CLA is united with the NFU in demanding a reversal of the price cuts from 1 August."

He added: "Farmers who supply milk to retailers and processors that do not pay them a price reflecting the cost of production deserve better. Retailers and processors have a corporate and social responsibility to producers and must ensure those providing milk receive a fair price.

"The CLA supports this campaign to raise awareness of the plight of dairy farmers with consumers. The more the public knows about where their milk, cheese and yoghurts come from, the more they will understand why they should pay a fair price for a quality product."

Sussex CLA member and dairy farmer Charles Burgoyne added that unity on this subject between all the countryside bodies is the only way forward.
