The CLA Game Fair breaks record as crowds see VIP visits and top debatesA record 151,000 people from throughout the South East and beyond visited The CLA Game Fair over three days at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, which boasted visits from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Leader of the Opposition David Cameron and Defra Minister Lord Rooker. The show – the flagship of the CLA – was an overwhelming success, both politically and in terms of its attendance which was up more than nine percent on the previous record of 138,000 set in 2006.
CLA South East regional director Rupert Ashby said: "It is a record figure and demonstrates clearly the importance of the countryside to people of all ages and backgrounds.
"I think the key point is to demonstrate the huge and increasing support that there is from people who enjoy the countryside and want to do things from field sports to country cooking to equestrian pursuits to learning about locally sourced foods."
Rupert Ashby added: "It is disappointing the popularity of the countryside and all it has to offer is rising while the Government's attention appears to be going in the opposite direction."
The CLA Game Fair was celebrating its 50th birthday and proved to be the premier showcase for the rural economy with CLA stands on the Just Ask campaign for locally sourced foods, and on diversification.
Lord Rooker, spent almost two hours touring The CLA Game Fair site on Saturday, July 26, with CLA Deputy President William Worsley.
Afterwards the clearly delighted Minister for Sustainable Food and Farming and Animal Health said: "I'd force all the Ministers in the Government to come here. There's no reason why every Government department would not benefit from it.
"The Trade Minister and Education and Skills Minister and all my fellow Defra ministers should be here. I would have an edict for every Minister to attend The CLA Game Fair. It is an event that tells you something about England."
Leader of the Opposition David Cameron was also thrilled by what he saw on his whirlwind tour of the site on Friday, July 25.
Mr Cameron said: "The CLA Game Fair is bigger and better than ever – it's a good day out. I am delighted it is taking place in my constituency of West Oxfordshire.
"What we want is a living and working countryside. The CLA Game Fair has lots of examples of the things which are great about the countryside in all its wonderful diversity."
CLA Director General Adrian Gane said: "We have had a record number of visitors, and it proves the wide appeal of The CLA Game Fair to the wider community."
Of particular interest was The CLA Fly-Tip where TV star Phil Spencer, presenter of Channel 4's Location, Location, Location, launched the CLA Fly-tipping Campaign with CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, highlighting the unfairness of landowners having to pay to clear up fly-tipped material on their land. |
