Quex Estates in Thanet win Emsden Cup for conservation

CLA Kent branch chairman, Judith Norris, presented the Emsden Cup for conservation to Anthony Curwen of Quex Park Estates at the Kent Show. Quex Park Estates cover around 577 hectares of Kent in Thanet, Birchington and Richborough. The farmland is part of a diversified estate including a major visitor attraction (the Powell-Cotton museum).

The soils are a mix of brickearth, a high quality fine silty soil, sand, loam, and alluvial clays on the marshes.  All of the 'upland' area of the farmland is in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone and is managed accordingly. The farming enterprises are arable (winter wheat, winter oil seed rape, grain maize and potatoes) and livestock (a Sussex beef herd of 90 cows and calves plus some fatteners and two bulls).  The main arable operations site is at Woodchurch Farm and the stock yards are at Kingsend. The 160 hectares of grassland is divided between 20 hectares of parkland at Quex and 140 hectares at Kingsend, including 15 hectares of grazing marsh by the river Stour which is in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS). The estate is also in the Entry Level Stewardship Scheme (ELS).  Quex is also a LEAF (Linking Environment & Farming) member currently registering for the LEAF Marque accreditation, and hosted a LEAF open Farm Sunday in June. As part of the Local 'Trees for Thanet' campaign, many miles of hedges and trees have been planted by local schools and other volunteers.

The Emsden Cup was originally donated some 20 years ago. At the time, Brigadier Brian Emsden, a keen conservationist, was the Regional Secretary of the CLA (Country Land and Business Association), and was instrumental in raising £15,000 of funds to help start Kent Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG). After Brigadier Emsden's death in post, the members of the Kent Branch of the CLA presented the Emsden Trophy in his memory, to be awarded by FWAG.
