Mannings Heath shop rewarded for community role

The Village Shop, Mannings Heath, was awarded the Action in Rural Sussex/CLA Award at the South of England Show on June 5, in recognition of the work done by the shop's owners Richard and Ann Walter to create a thriving business which forms a key part of the community.

The CLA have joined with Action in Rural Sussex to create an award which recognises businesses which make an important contribution to the health of the rural economy. The presentation was made by the Duke of Norfolk and Martin Hole, CLA Sussex branch chairman.

Three years ago, The Village Shop in Mannings Heath was a general shop which struggled to compete with the supermarkets, and was on the brink of closure. The store was re-invented as a farm shop and delicatessen, running a loyalty card scheme in which the majority of residents participate. The shop provides an important outlet for local produce and is a vital focal point for the community. The shop sells seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat from local herds, fresh flowers and a home delivery service for the elderly. It also sells tickets for events run by local organisations, and raises money for local and national charities and appeals.

CLA Sussex branch chairman Martin Hole said: "For a village shop to survive these days takes hard work and innovation. Richard and Ann have shown that it is possible to be commercially viable as well as providing a vital service to the rural community. Their example is a very encouraging one for all of us who care about the countryside's vitality and commercial viability."

Richard is also president of Nuthurst Cricket Club and vice president of the local Rotary Club. Ann is on the Millennium committee, which organises social events in the village throughout the year.
