Agriculture must be part of our future, says CLA president at Kent Show "If we lose our ability to produce agriculture in Kent, we cannot just start up again later, having lost all the infrastructure it requires" said CLA president David Fursdon at a seminar on the theme Why Farming Matters to Us on the Friday morning of the Kent Show (July 13th). "If we lose agriculture, we risk the landscape plus the entire rural economy, including the employment which farming, directly and indirectly, provides. "One third of Kent is covered by Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designation. We must ensure that this is not used as an excuse for nimbyism and to hamper the ability of the countryside to sustain itself."
The seminar was part of an initiative between the CLA, Kent County Agricultural Society, the NFU, Hadlow College, Produced in Kent and the Kent Downs AONB to promote farming at the Kent Show (13th – 15th July). Other speakers included Lord Rooker, Minister of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, NFU president Peter Kendall and Kent-based celebrity chef Richard Philips, who has just joined the CLA's "Just Ask" local food campaign, aimed at encouraging people to ask where the food on their plate has come from. Richard gave a cookery demonstration at the seminar using local ingredients, including asparagus, strawberries and sparkling wine.
David Fursdon, highlighting the need for people to try their best to source food locally in Kent, said: "At the hotel where I stayed in Maidstone last night, I asked the waiter where the food I was eating had come from. He didn't know so he asked the chef. He hadn't got a clue either. But it is heartening to hear of chefs in Kent like Richard Philips who regard local sourcing as so important."
The focal point of the initiative was an exhibit, funded by SEEDA, aimed at highlighting the importance of agriculture and horticulture in our everyday lives. The intention is to engage positively with consumers underlining issues such as food quality, secure food supplies, beautiful countryside, jobs and opportunities for outside leisure. |
