Roof repair bill prompts characterful conversionFrank and Pamela Panton have converted a brick, timber and Kent peg tile Grade II listed farm building of Tudor origin into office accommodation at Grove End Farm near Sittingbourne in Kent. Dr and Mrs Panton, who are CLA members, manage Grove End's 200 acres on a share farming basis. The conversion, called The Weigh Bridge after an ancient weigh bridge alongside it, was set in motion when, faced with a large bill to repair the roof of the existing building, the Pantons called in David Cox, who specialises in restoring listed agricultural buildings. Removal of false ceilings revealed a "splendid roof" and original oak shutter windows, which have been incorporated into the new office space. Rupert Austin of Canterbury Archaeological Trust performed the survey for planning consent, and discovered a building which, according to Mrs Panton was: "Rather more interesting than had been anticipated from its exterior." The conversion process was helped by a SEEDA grant. The new open-plan office offers about 1,500 sq ft of space, which can be divided into two units if required.
