400 Hounds gather at the CLA Game Fair

Most of the local packs of hounds are preparing for The CLA Game Fair, the worlds greatest countryside event which is returning to Blenheim Palace to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Friday 25th July – Sunday 27th July 2008. Held in association with the Daily Telegraph, The CLA Game Fair is internationally recognised as THE showcase for all aspects of rural and country life and attracts over 135,000 visitors from across the world.

Each day there are two Hound Parades in the Main Arena with two packs of Foxhounds and two Foot Packs.  There is also a special area dedicated to an Exhibition of Hounds where 8 other Packs gather daily, representing as wide a range as possible of all the different hound types and breeds.  Each Pack will have information about their type of hounds and the country they hunt over with a member of the Hunt Staff present to answer questions.

The person who has put all this together for the last three CLA Game Fairs is Katherine Elgar who hunts with the Wilton Hunt and is Joint Secretary with her husband Mark of the Wilton Point to Point.  "It is quite a challenge each year getting a good mix of hounds for each day," said Katherine, "We need 36 packs to come over the three days and July is not an easy time for them.  We have several different types of Foxhounds coming together with Harriers, Beagles, Bassets, Mink Hounds, Bloodhounds and Drag Hounds.  Blenheim is too far to ask the Stag Hounds and the Fell Hounds to come so they take part when The Game Fair is held in their area.  The Ross Harriers are coming all the way from Herefordshire to represent the Harriers.  A spectacular 400 hounds will take part in The Game Fair across the three days"

Throughout the Summer months, Masters, Huntsmen and the Hunt Staff including the Stud grooms who have to produce smart horses when most are turned away for the summer, are all called on increasingly to parade at Shows and events throughout the country.  Hounds are always a popular sight at Shows but it does entail a lot of extra work and time away from kennels.

As Katherine points out "A word of thanks when you see them makes it all worthwhile and we all appreciate this excellent shop window to show the public that hunting is very much alive and well, despite the Ban, waiting for better times ahead" Certainly, the crowds at this years CLA Game Fair will have a wide variety of Hunts and hounds to enjoy.
