Search is on for gamekeepers and riverkeepers for service awardsThe CLA is seeking Gamekeepers and Riverkeepers who have dedicated a lifetime to looking after large areas of the countryside or rivers so they can be recognised publicly at The CLA Game Fair, the world's largest countryside event, which takes place at Ragley Hall, Alcester, Warwickshire, on Friday 23 – Sunday 25 July.By making this annual presentation The CLA Game Fair increases the awareness of the hard work and dedication that can often go unrecognised. The presentation at The CLA Game Fair presents a unique opportunity for Estate and Shoot owners and managers and everyone who cares for the countryside to say a public thank you to the people who have given the best part of their working life to it. CLA Game Fair Director David Hough said, "In areas where wildlife is abundant, where habitat is healthy and diverse and where nature truly is in balance, the one consistent factor is a good gamekeeper. We want to track down the longest serving members of this distinguished profession and say a sincere 'thank you' for looking after our countryside and our sport". Rupert Ashby, CLA South East regional director, said: "Gamekeepers and Riverkeepers are two of those jobs where we are all aware of their work, but not of them. Many of us have appreciated much of the biodiversity of cropping and woodlands, but very few of us see the quiet men and women who spend long, often solitary hours at their labour. "These awards are an opportunity to recognise their efforts over the years." To qualify for the CLA Long Service Award to Gamekeepers a gamekeeper must have achieved at least 40 years service to the countryside on not more than five estates. In further recognition at 50 and 60 years a keeper will receive an additional bar to his medal. The CLA Long Service Award to Riverkeepers and Ghillies provides an opportunity to recognise the generations of Riverkeepers and Ghillies who have often given a lifetime of hard work to the preservation and protection of our river systems and management and conservation of the rural environment. To achieve this award, a Riverkeeper or Ghillie must have dedicated at least 25 years to looking after the same river system. Potential candidates for the awards must be nominated by an employer; further details on both the CLA Long Service Awards and how to nominate an individual can be obtained from The CLA Game Fair office, PO box 6452, Basingstoke, Hants, RG25 2XQ or email: gamefair@cla.org.uk |
