John Fairey killed in air crashJohn Fairey DL (1935-2009) John Fairey, the owner of the Bossington Estate in the Test Valley just south of Stockbridge, was killed while at the controls of his vintage aircraft when it crashed in Lincolnshire on 7 July 2009.As the obituary columns in the National press made clear, John was well known and highly respected in aviation circles. He was held in similar regard within the landowning community in Hampshire.
He was a long standing member of the CLA and an active member of the Branch committee over many years. His experience of running a large sporting estate and also a farming enterprise in the States meant that his contributions both within committee and in the margins, were invaluable. Moreover, owning a substantial stretch of the Test made him well qualified to represent the landowning interest in discussions with Government Agencies and the Water Companies. His wide professional knowledge apart, he was an especially good committee member in that he invariably attended all Branch events and was always on hand to help the organisers in any way that he could.
John will be remembered as a quiet, self contained man with a generous nature and a diffident charm and also as a man of principle with strong convictions. He is a considerable loss to the County and to his many friends.
We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife and to his daughter. |
