Kent members visit Glyndebourne for AGM

Members enjoyed a glorious day at Glyndebourne on Thursday 26 April for this year's Kent AGM.

Kent President Roddy Loder-Symonds chaired the AGM, thanking the host Gus Christie and sponsors Thomas Eggar, Chavereys and Strutt & Parker and welcoming CLA President Harry Cotterell. During the morning, Branch Chairman Judith Norris presented members with the newly launched CLA Equine report and discussed the new National Planning Policy Framework highlighting the work of the CLA in its finalisation. CLA President Harry Cotterell finished the AGM by talking to members about current policies including; access, planning, CAP reform and water resources.

During the afternoon Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne Gus Christie took members on an exclusive tour behind the scenes of the Glyndebourne Opera House and the organ room in the main house.

Following considerable extension since 1934, when Glyndebourne's founders John Christie and wife Audrey Mildmay opened the first Festival, the opera house now entertains around 150,000 people per year with over 120 live opera performances. The original ethos: "Not just the best we can do but the best that can be done anywhere", lives on as Glyndebourne has been instrumental in introducing digital innovations such as screening the live operas to The Guardian online. Glyndebourne now employs 150 people per year full time with over 800 people in high summer season.

Glyndebourne is also the first UK arts organisation to generate its own power using a large scale wind turbine. Members were taken by bus to view the renewable energy resource which generates approximately 90 percent of the estates annual electricity requirements and is expected to reduce total direct carbon emissions at the opera house by 50 percent.

Happily the sun shone despite the formidable weather forecast and members were able to finish the day enjoying the extensive grounds of Glyndebourne.
