During Lancashire visit, CLA President calls for new Government to put farming at heart of rural economy As the country waited to discover the shape of the new Government, CLA President William Worsley stressed that food production must be given priority in the rural economy, during a visit to Lancashire. Speaking to members at the Cockerham home of Philip Halhead, MD of Norbreck Genetics, Mr Worsley called for Government to support the rural economy, and recognise that food production is key, if it is to fulfil its potential. Mr Worsley said: "We need policies to help farmers and land managers continue to provide what society wants and expects from the countryside. "This means having a Government that will fight for a Common Agricultural Policy that promotes both the production of food and a high quality natural environment; a Government that will introduce a planning system which facilitates the development of small-scale business rather than frustrating it, and a Government that ensures that broadband of two megabits per second becomes a reality for all by 2012." "We need the right framework to enable land managers to deliver the public goods that are core to the future of life in Britain: putting food on our tables, safeguarding our environment and tackling global warming." Mr Worsley added that, with half of all MPs being newly elected, he expected the CLA to be extremely busy over the coming months briefing politicians of all parties on the key rural issues. A job made easier, he said, by the fact that "When the CLA says something, it carries weight." The CLA president then travelled along the Lancashire coast to meet with CLA members to discuss coastal management issues. |
