CLA says climate change creates opportunities for land managers The CLA has stressed the importance of talks that should lead to a new international agreement on how to tackle climate change. In Copenhagen this December, more than 180 countries will gather to negotiate and agree a new international deal to tackle climate change and, say the rural economy experts, while climate change could threaten agriculture and forestry, it could also open up new opportunities for land-based businesses such as carbon storage or renewable energy. Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North, said: "Land managers are in a unique position and have an essential role to play in the mitigation of climate change. We can influence farming, forestry, water, coastline management and ecosystems, and also help reduce the problem by managing carbon stocks, providing more renewable sources for energy and heat, and even construction materials.
"As well as what our Members are doing on the ground, we also support the efforts of those seeking international agreements that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"However, the CLA is concerned that the policies to encourage a switch by consumers to renewables are not being whole-heartedly pursued."
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher added: "These negotiations might seem arcane and distant from farming and forestry in England and Wales. Yet they could contain measures which could enable our land managers to make a real contribution to mitigating climate change and support the rural economy in the process." |

Douglas is from an Aberdeenshire farming family and trained as an animal nutritionist after graduating from the University of Aberdeen. He held technical and management positions in the agricultural supply industry for 20 years prior to joining the CLA in 2001 as North West Regional Director.
