Pupils get detention because they don’t have broadband

One of the many stories of frustration experience by people unable to access a good broadband connection comes from Ted Lester, a resident of Wray Village in Lancashire, who was horrified to learn that his children had been given detention because they were unable to access their homework online.

The revelation comes during the CLA's Can't Get Online Week, where internet and social media expert John Popham has been touring the country collecting evidence of broadband problems – and solutions.

Ted Lester is unable to get fast broadband at home and, as he works for an American software company, has had to rent office premises to be able to work.

Ted's frustration at the state of broadband access in the rural areas of the UK is obvious. He said: "I consider broadband is as essential a service as fire, police or health, yet while I can enjoy a fast, free connection on a beach in Egypt, I cannot get one at home.

"My children do not enjoy the same educational opportunities as others and I was horrified to hear that they had been given detention because they could not access their homework online. They were so embarrassed about this that they did not want to tell me."

Mr  Popham says this is not an isolated case and believes there is a social stigma attached to not having a good internet connection. He said: "As I tour the country, I hear similar stories, even to the point where children are texting homework to a friend with a good connection so they can upload it and keep their work up to date.

"In this day and age, this is simply not acceptable."

CLA North Communications Manager Mike Ashton added: "This is exactly the kind of evidence we feared might be revealed this week. Broadband is not simply about playing games and watching videos. It is essential to avoid social and economic deprivation."
