CLA Comment : Bovine TB measures Proposals for additional measures to help control bovine tuberculosis in cattle were published for public consultation today (15 September) by Agriculture Minister Jim Paice. The consultation proposes issuing licences under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 to enable farmers and landowners to cull badgers, at their own expense. Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North said: "This must be welcomed as a common sense, but overdue announcement. With bovine TB continuing to cause havoc to the welfare of cattle, their keepers and wildlife, and costing the country many millions of pounds, something has to be done. "This is not all-out war on badgers. The need for a farmer to obtain a licence will ensure that any action taken against wildlife will be necessary and appropriate. Douglas is from an Aberdeenshire farming family and trained as an animal nutritionist after graduating from the University of Aberdeen. He held technical and management positions in the agricultural supply industry for 20 years prior to joining the CLA in 2001 as North West Regional Director. He was previously Chairman of Cumbria Fells & Dales RDPE Local Action Group and Vice Chairman of the North West Rural Affairs Forum.
