CLA says industry can ‘meet challenge of cutting regulation’ The CLA says that farmers and rural land managers would rise to the challenge set by a report from the Farming Regulation Task Force, presented to Farming Minister Jim Paice today, and that the industry is ready to work with the Government to reduce excessive regulation while maintaining high farming and environmental standards. CLA Deputy President Harry Cotterell said: "Task Force Chairman Richard Macdonald and his team have done an excellent job of listening to stakeholders. Their report is a great first step to deleting pointless bureaucracy." He particularly welcomed the concept of "earned recognition" – the idea that regulators should reward rural businesses for taking steps to maintain high standards without government interference.
The CLA Deputy President concluded: "This should go a long way towards reducing the burden of regulation on farmers and land managers. The proposals relating to the planning system are also good news and should do much to encourage land-based business to flourish. "We recognise Farming Minister Jim Paice's foresight in commissioning this report and trust he will drive through its implementation with the same resolve."
Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North, added: "This Report has been long awaited by the industry, and our members in the North were very keen to put their views forward, so it is gratifying to see that Mr MacDonald has been listening to much of what they said.
"'Earned recognition' is indeed to be welcomed, as is anything that frees up farmers and land managers from time doing paperwork, allowing them to concentrate on running their businesses. This can only make sense for the rural economy and the economy in general.
"In particular, the six-day standstill rule, was brought in under extraordinary circumstances, but for years now has served only to put livestock farmers under severe management and financial pressures. It is only right that this should be reviewed."

Douglas is from an Aberdeenshire farming family and trained as an animal nutritionist after graduating from the University of Aberdeen. He held technical and management positions in the agricultural supply industry for 20 years prior to joining the CLA in 2001 as North West Regional Director.
