Renewable Heat Incentive will boost the rural economy

This week's announcement that the applications for funding under the Government's Renewable Heat Incentive are now open will help boost business opportunities in the rural economy as well as driving down carbon emissions – according to the Country Land and Business Association.

The CLA has lobbied for more than 10 years for an incentive to deliver renewable heat technologies, such as biomass, and says news that the scheme is now open will offer real opportunities for farmers and landowners who had been waiting for the green light to launch their projects.

Angus Collingwood-Cameron, Director CLA North East said: "The news that the scheme is at last open for applications means that our members will be able to benefit from support mechanisms which are essential to help kick start these renewable heat technologies."

The scheme had been delayed since September as Department for Energy and Climate Change sought to ensure the scheme complied with European rules. The CLA says the delay had a serious impact on cash flows where business had geared up to go in September.

Payments under the new scheme will be on top of existing opportunities for renewable electricity and in addition to the supply of feed stocks for renewable transport fuels.

Mr Collingwood-Cameron added: "This is good news for the rural economy as the RHI will boost the market for biomass, so creating a local supply chain. Furthermore, it will also provide an added boost for woodland management in the region, which will have further environmental benefits."

To apply for support under the RHI contact Ofgem who are responsible for administering the scheme.  More information about how to apply, as well as detailed guidance documents to support the process, is available on their website at www.ofgem.gov.uk/rhi.  Alternatively, contact their enquiries centre on 0845 200 2122 or by email to RHI.Enquiry@ofgem.gov.uk.
