Comment by the CLA on the latest farmland bird index figures CLA President William Worsley said: "This year's results do not make great reading, and clearly there is more work to be done on investigating the various possible causes of the decline. "Nevertheless, many farmers and land managers have seen positive results in the number of birds on their land through Environmental Stewardship. The CLA and NFU-led Campaign for the Farmed Environment provides advice and training about management practices that can boost farmland birds and wildlife as well as protecting soil and water resources. Early indications show that a greater range of these management options are being taken on board as Entry Level Stewardship agreements are renewed." Angus Collingwood-Cameron, CLA North East Director, added: "These are disappointing figures. With 84% of farmland in the region covered by agri-environment schemes it is clear that North East farmers are doing their bit in managing farmland for environmental objectives.
"It is not clear why this decline has taken place, but we must not forget that the last two summers have not been conducive to wild bird brood rearing. Mother Nature has a big part to play in this regard. Following the winter that we experienced this year, I cannot be optimistic for 2010 figures. Breeding populations must have been affected prior to the good brood rearing conditions of this year. Thank goodness our farmers are actively engaged in habitat management or the situation could be more depressing." |
