CLA President visits Capability Brown’s birthplace

CLA National President William Worsley has visited the birthplace of the most famous of all landscape gardeners, Capability Brown, at Kirkharle, Northumberland during a tour of the North East.

Together with CLA's North East Director Angus Collingwood-Cameron, Mr Worsley met CLA North East President John Anderson, owner of Kirkharle, who also conducted a tour of the Kirkharle Courtyard farm diversification, which is now home to ten thriving businesses employing 40 people.

Mr Worsley said: "It is gratifying to see a farm that has adapted to economic change, yet continues to work in harmony with nature and the landscape, providing economic benefit for the wider rural community. I also found it fascinating to see what is probably Capability Brown's earliest garden design taking shape some 270 years after he started to become an immense influence on the English landscape."

Capability Brown's plan for Kirkharle lay hidden in a desk until  Mr Anderson discovered it in 1980. It portrays blocks containing hundreds of beech, oak, Scots pine, shrubs and fruit trees around a serpentine lake. Mr Anderson, whose family bought the land in 1833, has created an accessible footpath around the lake and planting is already starting to show results .

Mr Anderson said: "Though much of the original landscape has changed since Brown first drew the plan, it is still exciting to implement part of his vision; hopefully this will convey a flavor of his genius. It will take time before the full impact can be appreciated, but at least our visitors are afforded over the years the unique pleasure of witnessing a Brown landscape develop from infancy through to maturity."
