Private water supply regulations warning from CLA West Midlands

The Country Land and Business Association in the West Midlands has today warned that affected rural householders and businesses could be facing an inspection charge of £400 per annum if proposed Defra changes to the regulations that control private water supplies are introduced.

CLA West Midlands Director Caroline Bedell said: "Some of the proposed changes will have serious cost implications for owners of private water supplies that go to a single property and are used for commercial purposes such as a farm or a bed and breakfast enterprise. The changes are yet another example of over-regulation resulting in increased costs for countryside dwellers and rural businesses.

Defra is also proposing to "gold plate" the regulations by bringing in private distribution systems – for example where mains water comes onto a campsite but is distributed to individual pitches through the landowner's own system.

Caroline added: "We strongly advise people who have private water supplies to study the consultation documents and register their concerns at this unjustified over regulation directly to Defra, and to do it by 3 November."
