BY GEORGE, I JUST CAN’T REMEMBER… - CLA SETS SCHOOL CHILDREN RHYMING CHALLENGE
Can you name the date of St George's Day? Not many people can – even though it is the same date as Shakespeare's birthday! According to a poll, run by the Country Land & Business Association (CLA), only 20% of people living in England could correctly identify 23 April as England's national day. To combat this national amnesia, the CLA are challenging school children to compose a rhyme to help people remember the date of St George's Day. Budding poet laureates can win themselves and their schools a fantastic prize by creating a rhyme that will remind people that St George's Day is the 23rd of April. There is no word limit and it can be a poem, rap or limerick but it must be easy to learn and remember. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.cla.org.uk/23april or teachers can call 020 7460 7936 for an information pack - but hurry the deadline is 18 March 2005. As well as being the official patron saint of England, St George is the patron saint of farm workers and the CLA uses his day to promote locally-sourced food. The competition will be judged by Stephen Twigg MP, Schools Minister, Tim Collins MP, Shadow Education Secretary and CLA President, Mark Hudson. The competition is open to anyone living in England who is aged 16 or below, and there will be two prizes, one for 11 and under, and one for 12-16 year olds. There are prizes amounting to a total of £1,000 (£500 for each category) and will include something for the individual and their school.
