Are your agricultural vehicles fit for the road? A safety leaflet has been produced by the Highways Agency in association with the CLA in a bid to make sure farm vehicles are not a hazard on public roads.
Fit to go, Are your agricultural vehicles fit for the road? aims to encourage farmers and land workers to check their tractors and trailers comply with road safety regulations, and gives tips to ensure the general wellbeing of all road users. Farm workers are told that they should not 'phone while driving, and that they should allow other drivers to overtake when safe. The leaflet also prompts farmers to check that trailers parked overnight on public roads have lights, and reminds them that they should be able to see behind their trailer using mirrors. Other guidelines tell drivers of agricultural vehicles to give as much clearance as possible when overtaking horses and cyclists and to avoid tracking mud and stones off fields onto the road. The flier also explains that other motorists must be warned about any mud on the road and that action should be taken to clean the road after use. The CLA says that with harvesting and other farming operations coming together at this time of year, tractor drivers need to be on the road - but it can be hard to appreciate that when you are driving behind one, admits Caroline Bedell, director of CLA West Midlands. "The majority of tractor driver's do pull in to allow the public to pass by, but getting stuck behind one can lead to drivers taking unnecessary risks and overtaking at the most inopportune times, creating a danger to themselves and to other road users," says Mrs Bedell. The rural watchdog leader added that although tractors are often blamed for hold-ups, slow-moving lorries and cars towing caravans are also at fault. "It is important for car drivers to realise that farmers have a job to do and sometimes they are going to be held up. Occasionally it's difficult for farmers to pull over safely. "However, the Highway Code states that anyone causing traffic to back up as a result of their slow speed must pull over at the earliest and safest opportunity to allow faster vehicles to pass. "CLA West Midlands is reminding all drivers of slow moving vehicles to think of other road users and to follow the Highway Code." |
