West Midlands Support for CLA's New Equine PolicyThe equine sector generates a turnover of around £5billion a year for the rural economy – but it is also one of the most fragmented sectors and without the right policy and advisory framework its economic potential will remain underexploited. That's the message contained in a new equine business report published today (22 March) by the CLA which claims that the equine industry is being held back by restrictions on planning, insurance and tax. The document, titled "Clearing Hurdles" was launched by equestrian legend, Lucinda Green, supported by Judith Norris, chairman of the Equine Business Working Group and CLA President and Herefordshire Landowner Harry Cotterell – who said that the aim of the document was to help promote a modern and thriving equine business sector.
West Midlands Comment:
CLA Members Adrian and Jane Perry recently took over the running of the family Riding School near Solihull. Adrian believes that the CLA report will help raise awareness of the valuable contribution that the industry makes to the rural economy.
He says: "My parents set up the business in 1985 and ran the business successfully for many years, but latterly struggled to make the business profitable due to effects and restraints of changing legislation, hugely increased insurance premiums and the ever-shrinking countryside. Help is required across the board to assist small businesses like our own to thrive and reach their full potential.
"Although we are constantly trying to improve the facilities and surrounding area we feel restricted by legislation and hidden costs, not only directly affecting us but other local landowners who are reluctant to let out land to equestrian businesses due to the effect it has on their taxation status. Changes in government legislation would have such a positive effect on the countryside opening it up for all to enjoy and care for." |
