Rural businesses targeted by oil thieves as fuel prices riseRural businesses are being warned to watch out for fuel thieves as reports of a rural crimewave hit the region.
According to The Country Land And Business Association (CLA) in the West Midlands, increasing fuel prices and shortages of heating oil have led to a rise in fuel thefts in the countryside.
Vehicle and heating fuel is being targeted, claims The CLA.
Edmund Sword, of CLA insurance services, said: "Due to high global oil prices we are seeing an extraordinary increase in the cost of fuel, which has triggered an increase in thefts from farms.
"Both diesel and petrol prices have gone up while heating oil prices in the region have increased by some 50 per cent since last summer. This means that farms, which often store large quantities of both heating oil and vehicle fuel, are attractive to thieves."
The impact of fuel crime has even been felt directly by CLA West Midlands. Just the other day an estimated £330 worth of heating oil was siphoned from the business based at Knightley near Woodseaves in Staffordshire.
CLA regional director Caroline Bedell said: "The CLA is lobbying the Government about the increasing fuel prices, so it's ironic that we should fall victim to this crime.
"Expensive fuel is leading to criminal activity that could have a knock-on effect to everyone – especially farmers' businesses and to shoppers buying their produce."
