Shropshire MEP backs CLA’s fight against EU red tapeRural watchdog, the CLA, has reiterated its concerns about the level of red tape imposed by the European Union at talks with Conservative MEP for Shropshire, Philip Bradbourn OBE. The Minister met with CLA West Midlands regional adviser Donna Tavernor and CLA members to discuss how Shropshire can be better represented on the EU stage. At the meeting, held at the Plowden Estate in Lydbury North earlier this week, farmers and landowners expressed unease about the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2013 and the impact that it may have on Shropshire's farming industry. A concerned Mr Bradbourn said: "Farming is an important part of our way of life and it is essential that food production remains strong and viable in the UK. What is needed is a more flexible and common sense approach to the amount of top down diktat emanating from the EU. "Over regulation is imposing unnecessary and costly burdens on our local farming community, which we need to ensure is central to discussions when the Common Agricultural Policy is reviewed in 2013. Also of particular importance is the issue of food security and I believe that this is key for both farmers and consumers in Shropshire." Donna Tavernor added: "It's good to know Mr Bradbourne agrees that farmers and landowners need to be freed from the constraints that are threatening to strangle them and the whole economy. Whenever I meet rural businesses, including farms, it is never long before the issue of red tape is raised. The CLA has been lobbying on this for years, and now it appears that Government is listening." |
