DEVASTATING FIRE RISK TO COUNTRYSIDE - CLA ISSUES TIMELY REMINDER (18.07.06)
The CLA is appealing to both visitors and residents in the countryside to take extreme care following the first outbreaks of fire in the West Midlands, the result of the current hot dry conditions.

The CLA is appealing to both visitors and residents in the countryside to take extreme care following the first outbreaks of fire in the West Midlands, the result of the current hot dry conditions.

Following an incident yesterday (17th July), involving a firestorm across a field of rape at Woodseaves, Staffordshire, Frances Beatty, Director CLA West Midlands, warned: "The recent weather has created tinderbox conditions, just at the time when the break up of schools heralds an influx of visitors into the countryside. Although most people are well aware of how fire can spread quickly and dangerously, the present extreme conditions are seldom encountered and people forget how devastating fires are so easily started.

She advised: "No matter how tempting the site, please ensure that barbeques are only lit in safe places. Disposable barbecues are readily available, but they should only be used in safe places in the open countryside if at all, and doused thoroughly, not left.

"Be extra careful with discarded matches and cigarettes - unfortunately there's been a growing and alarming trend for people to throw lighted cigarettes out of their cars, rather than use the ashtrays.

"Remember also that glass bottles left lying could also lead to grass or vegetation catching fire."

Frances Beatty pointed out: "Fires can kill, and even if no human life is lost the damage to wildlife and the environment can be immense and irreversible. Since the introduction of Open Access legislation, visitors may be tempted to leave established paths, which may only put them in more danger. We of course welcome visitors into the countryside, and hope that this year's weather encourages many more people to enjoy the rural delights of this country. All we ask is that they exercise care."
