Rural watchdog backs fuel price hike-hit drivers A rural watchdog has lent its support to countryside motorists feeling the pinch due to hikes in fuel duty. The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) in the West Midlands says motorists planning to drive to visit family and rural tourist attractions this August bank holiday are being hit with record fuel costs. The increase of 4p would see prices jump from today's average price of 116.65p to around 121p before the end of the month and comes after the price of crude oil has steadily increased. Filling up a tank in an average car will cost families £7 more than a year ago. The fuel rise has been forecast by the RMI Petrol, which represents two thirds of the 9,000 petrol forecourt sites in the country. The CLA, which supports owners of land, property and businesses in rural England and Wales, argues the Government needs to be aware of the impact such price-hikes can have on families and businesses, especially in rural areas. CLA West Midlands director, Caroline Bedell, said: "If you look at rural areas there really is no alternative to the car and it's significantly increasing people's cost of living. Motorists will have to pay considerably more for their fuel just as the summer comes to an end and before the school years starts. "What's even more worrying is that petrol prices are likely to carry on rising later this year and into 2011 because of higher taxes." Inflated fuel prices come as fears that other key living costs will rise. The price of a loaf of bread is expected to rise by 10p to 129p, which would be a record, after Russia suffers from its hottest summer in a century, wiping out much of the world's wheat harvest. |
