CLA URGES RURAL BUSINESSES TO 'GO FOR GOLD' AT THE 2012 OLYMPICS

CLA URGES RURAL BUSINESSES TO 'GO FOR GOLD' AT THE 2012 OLYMPICS

The Country Land and Business (CLA) has announced its drive to ensure that rural businesses win their own Gold Medal for their supporting role in the London 2012 Olympics.

With the world's biggest sporting event coming to the capital city, the CLA has appointed its own Olympic Co-ordinator, Tim Isaac, to guarantee that rural businesses make the most of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that the Olympics presents.

Providing local food for the hundreds of thousands of attendees, including athletes, spectators and tourists, is just one of the vital ways rural businesses will be supporting the Olympics. With the possibility of up to 1.8 million tourists visiting Britain during the Olympics, there will be a huge demand for extra produce:

  • An extra 4,410,000 litres of milk will be needed; enough to fill almost two Olympic size swimming pools¹
  • And, if every tourist had a quarter pounder during their visit, the extra meat needed would weigh the equivalent of over 12 double decker buses²

The Olympics will also give rural businesses the chance to contribute to a 'low carbon' Games, by encouraging the consumption of local foods. The CLA is actively promoting this message through their Just Ask campaign which encourages the public to ask where the food on their plate comes from whenever they're out for a meal.

Tim Isaac said: "The Olympics will provide potentially huge benefits to rural business across the UK, as well as the opportunity to reconnect urban and rural areas. In addition to visiting London, Olympic tourists are likely to explore some of the beautiful countryside we have to offer. This means rural businesses will have the opportunity to attract international visitors and provide them with world class accommodation and hospitality. I will now being speaking to Regional Development Agencies, along with organising bodies to see how we can work with them for the benefit of rural businesses."

CLA West Midlands Director, Frances Beatty, commented: "We firmly believe that there is a real opportunity for rural businesses to connect with the Olympic market. It is important for people to start planning right away about how they can get involved with the Olympics and participate in the long-term benefits that the 2012 Games offer."

Mrs Beatty continued: "The CLA is always looking at ways to help rural businesses to improve and achieve success in their field. We are therefore happy to announce that a new website has also been established for members. Under the leadership of the Confederation of West Midlands Chambers of Commerce, the West Midlands Business Council is ensuring that businesses can find out about Olympic related tenders and form consortia to bid for work with like minded businesses in their sector . The service is free and should make bidding for Olympic work a lot easier to achieve."

Notes to Editor:

  • ¹ Figure based on 1.8 million people staying in England for seven days, and drinking 0.35litres of milk per day. The volume of an Olympic size swimming pool is 2,500,000 liters (assuming 2m depth).
  • ² Figure based on 1.8 million staying in England for seven days and eating one quarter pounder a day. 1.6 million tourists were attracted to the Sydney Olympics, and the 2012 Olympic Committee believes this figure will be higher for the UK. Therefore 1.8 million people is a modest estimation of the number of tourists the UK might expect in 2012.
