Call to support local food producers

Call to support local food producers A new guide to food and drink in and around the National Forest is now available.

The book lists where to buy great local food with details of producers and stockists of everything from meat to mushrooms, beer to bread and cakes to cheese.

Compiled by local food expert Barry Smith, it has mushroomed with every new issue adding newly discovered edible delights from the area.

Mr Smith said: "It surprised me that I discovered so many places to include in the guide.  I welcome suggestions from members of the public if anyone notices any venues missing.  Simply email me at food@nationalforest.org."

Rural watchdog, the CLA, fully supports the guidebook and has urged people to do more to support producers by sourcing food locally.

Staffordshire based CLA regional director, Caroline Bedell, said: "Over the last four years the CLA has been successful in promoting its Just Ask Campaign, where people are encouraged to ask where the food they are served comes from.  Buying British supports local food producers and shoppers get the full picture about where the groceries they purchase actually originate from."

The CLA also claims that public procurement of locally produced food is inadequate. It says that out of the public sector food annual budget of £1.8bn, only two per cent, or £36m, is spent on local food nationally.
