Support for CLA equine report from Cheshire’s newest studDespite the demands of a high profile launch for their Harthill Stud, Cheshire rider and businesswoman Nina Barbour and international event rider Oliver Townend took time out to support the CLA's new Equine policy report which aims to promote a modern and thriving equine business sector. The publication, "Clearing Hurdles" says that the equine sector generates a turnover of around £5billion a year for the rural economy – but it is also one of the most fragmented sectors and, without the right policy and advisory framework, its economic potential will remain underexploited. CLA Director Midlands Caroline Bedell said: "Harthill Stud is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by having a clear vision and the ability and perseverance to make it happen. But too often equine businesses are not achieving their full potential because of hurdles such as shifting regulations, tax rules, a complex planning regime and the increasing burden of insurance costs. These threats and more – together with potential opportunities - are highlighted in our report which, in an Olympic year when our riders will be in the world spotlight, could not be more timely." Nina Barbour said: "This report hits the nail on the head. Equine businesses are a thriving sector but are often held back unnecessarily. We have ourselves had to negotiate many of the issues raised by the CLA to arrive at today's launch. "Our equine industry deserves due credit for the huge economic contribution it makes. At Harthill we have a business that the whole region can be proud of, and that can stand comparison with the best in the world. Oliver Townend International event rider Oliver Townend is based at Gadlas Farm, near Ellesmere, in Shropshire. His career highlights to date include representing Great Britain three times at championship level, winning both Badminton and Burghley together with the HSBC Classics bonus in 2009. He has a passion for producing young horses, with a love for the Irish horse, stemming from years spent training and working in Ireland. |
