Game rearing code plans are unworkable, says watchdog A rural watchdog has slammed the Government's attack on gamebird rearing. The CLA says the Government has failed to take account of independent veterinary advice and the recommendations of a specialist stakeholder group set up to examine the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Gamebirds.
The CLA – working with partners across the game industry – had argued, during the consultation on Defra's game-keeping proposal, that minimum sizes and specified requirements for the design of cages were unnecessary and counterproductive.
However, the CLA said today that the Government has chosen to ignore its advice, putting many existing game rearing practices, such as the single pen "harem" system, at risk.
CLA West Midlands Director, Caroline Bedell, said: "It is important to provide a code that underpins sustainable game rearing, and so the CLA was pleased to work with Defra to look at the evidence on this issue. The Farm and Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) did not recommend fixed space standards, preferring to put their "five freedoms" of ideal states first.
"The CLA supported FAWC recommendations, and we are disappointed the Government has sought to push ahead regardless. Veterinary advice confirms that the management of any rearing system to ensure that the "five freedoms" are respected is far more important than any specific space or other regulation."
The Staffordshire based rural guru added: "The last minute changes to the code are unworkable and CLA will fight on behalf of our members to have this code re-examined." |
