Be responsible in the Countryside and we can all enjoy the Easter break says CLABe responsible in the Countryside and we can all enjoy the Easter break says CLA As much of the nation prepares to head to the countryside for the Easter break, CLA Midlands has issued its annual reminder that people should keep their distance from farm animals and their dogs under control. CLA Rural Adviser Donna Tavernor said: "Easter is the first long bank holiday of the year and we expect to welcome a large number of visitors to the countryside. "Spring in the Midlands is a joy shared by everyone, whether they live here or are just paying a short visit. However, it is a critical time for new-born animals, especially lambs. "I would ask that people take heed of any local advice from farmers and respect signs as farmers will not be taking a break over the weekend. The countryside is also a workplace and can present unfamiliar dangers and while farmers are doing their best to reduce any risk, everyone can play their part. "In particular, dogs should be kept well away from sheep even if no lambs are present, as pregnant ewes are extremely vulnerable to disturbance. Ground nesting birds are also very sensitive to commotion because they are sitting on eggs at the moment. "Some animals, particularly cows with calves, but also horses, pigs, and farmed deer, can react aggressively towards unfamiliar people. Before entering a field, check to see what alternatives there are. If you are in a field of farm animals, keep a safe distance and watch them carefully. "The only exception is if a dog walker attracts the attention of cows with calves – then the dog should be let go. The cows will follow the dog who invariably escapes, leaving the walker to get to safety. "It is always better to be safe and avoid the potential of injury." |
