Please note that as part of the recent CLA restructuring the counties of the East Midlands region have been divided between the new CLA East region and the new Midlands region. Consequently, existing news releases from the East Midlands are now only available on this website as archived articles. Members based in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire are now part of CLA East and should go to CLA East News for releases in their region. And members in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland are now part of the Midlands and should go to Midlands News for releases in their region. More housing is needed in the countryside, says CLA The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is advocating cross-subsidisation to keep young working families in the region's countryside and, in turn, keep villages thriving.
The East Midlands rural watchdog says landowners should be able to have sites for affordable homes and to have nomination rights for occupants to help combat the shortage of rural housing. CLA East Midlands director, Helen Woolley, maintains that the private sector could also be social landlords, believing estates would be "hands-on landlords" because they have a real interest and knowledge of the community. "We believe there is a need to put affordable housing alongside open market homes, and that schemes should fit in with a village, unlike some post-war council houses, which were often built on the fringes of villages, rather than integrated into the community. The CLA wants to see its members, as well as housing associations, able to let housing," added Mrs Woolley. Meanwhile, an East Midlands residential agency is claiming that the property market is looking rosier again. Stephen King, who is based at King West's Market Harborough office in Leicestershire, said: "Transaction levels are significantly up on the same period last year in some sectors by as much as 50%. We remain in uncertain times but there is every sign that recent activity is much more befitting of a healthier property market." Mr King added: "Demand remains strong and deals continue to be done with many properties poised to enter the market with King West over the coming weeks." The firm has recently expanded its business in Northamptonshire - another sign that the residential housing market is looking positive. |
