A dog day out in the countryside this Bank Holiday A rural watchdog in the East Midlands is offering up tips to help people enjoy Derbyshire's countryside this Bank Holiday weekend.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) says it's great to get away and enjoy nature but it's important to give animals plenty of space as they can behave unpredictably if you get too close, especially if they're with their young. The organisation is also urging people to follow paths wherever possible in fields where crops are growing and to leave gates and property as they are found. One of the most important rules though is to keep dogs under close control, but the CLA advises that if a farm animal chases you and your dog, it is safer to let your dog off the lead as you could get hurt by trying to protect it. CLA East Midlands regional adviser, Sylvia Hull, said: "The countryside is a great place to exercise dogs, but it's every owner's duty to make sure their dog is not a danger or nuisance to farm animals, wildlife or other people. "You do not have to put your dog on a lead on public paths, as long as it is under close control. But as a general rule, keep your dog on a lead if you cannot rely on its obedience. By law, farmers are entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals." For more information go to www.cla.org.uk |
