Please note that as part of the recent CLA restructuring the counties of the East Midlands region have been divided between the new CLA East region and the new Midlands region. Consequently, existing news releases from the East Midlands are now only available on this website as archived articles. Members based in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire are now part of CLA East and should go to CLA East News for releases in their region. And members in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland are now part of the Midlands and should go to Midlands News for releases in their region. Local food producer scoops Great Taste awards A Nottinghamshire food producer has won top honours in this year's Great Taste awards. Gonalston Farm Shop, just off the Southwell Road, entered its own Beef Biltong which won a one star gold award. The local business also submitted its South Africa style dried beef sausage, which won a two star gold award. It received praise from the judging panel for its 'good spicing' and for being a 'great honest sausage'. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the Great Taste awards are often described as the 'Oscars' of the food world. This year, over 5000 products were submitted for entry in the competition, held in London. Gonalston Farm Shop director, Georgie Mason, said: "Our butchery team work really hard to be inventive with new and different foods. This is great for them to win an award or two for their dedication to the job." Meanwhile, the Country Land and Business Association, of which Gonalston Farm Shop is a member, has urged the region's public sector to do more to support producers on their doorstep by sourcing food locally. According to the CLA, public procurement of locally produced food is still woefully inadequate. Helen Woolley, the CLA's regional director covering Nottinghamshire, said: "The Government must throw its weight behind British farmers and growers and support local food and the UK farming industry. "We believe public bodies must be given incentives to source food locally so that customers of the public sector are able to enjoy high quality local produce at a reasonable price." |
