Please note that as part of the recent CLA restructuring the counties of the East Midlands region have been divided between the new CLA East region and the new Midlands region. Consequently, existing news releases from the East Midlands are now only available on this website as archived articles. Members based in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire are now part of CLA East and should go to CLA East News for releases in their region. And members in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland are now part of the Midlands and should go to Midlands News for releases in their region. Buzzing businessman on war-vet fishing mission A Derbyshire member of rural watchdog, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), is urging people to donate to a charity for war veterans.
Tony Spacey who is also boss of honey making giant, Littleover Apiaries, on Robinson's Industrial Estate in Derby, helped set up 'Fishing for Heroes' which was founded at the 2008 CLA Game Fair.
Tony, a former soldier and a passionate game fisher, decided he wanted to do something more for the thousands of British and Commonwealth military veterans who get little or no help from any other source and so 'Fishing for Heroes' was born.
The charity provides fully expensed fly fishing courses as part of a therapy package for veterans who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), combat fatigue or any other emotional or psychological problem relating to them having been involved in active service.
Although the current campaigns are foremost in people's minds, any veteran from any era or conflict is eligible to apply.
Tony said: "I personally underwrite the management and running costs of the charity so we are able to contribute 100% of all donations to the veterans we want to help.
"There have been veterans out there who have committed suicide because they were not helped and there are veterans who are going to commit suicide before we can help them.
"We need help in making sure we can extend a helping hand and a supporting shoulder to as many of them as we can, while we still can."
Tony Spacey has earned praise from the Country and Land and Business Association (CLA).
East Midlands spokesman, Tim Barnes-Clay, said: "Tony Spacey is a valuable member of the CLA and despite the economic downturn, his honey business, Littleover Apiaries, has helped to strengthen the rural economy in Derbyshire and surrounding areas.
"Tony has shown time and again that he has the drive and determination to succeed at anything and that includes Fishing for Heroes, a charity which the CLA has the utmost respect."
