Donít be misled by recent rainfall, says CLA East
A rural business body says it is concerned about the impact the drought gripping East Anglia will have on crops this year.
As the first hosepipe ban in 20 years comes into force, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) says it is important the public is not misled by recent heavy rainfall, and has emphasised the region is still very much in drought.
CLA deputy regional director Tim Isaac, said. "Recent rain may have made crops look green again but it has not helped to grow grain. Wheat and barley will be affected and if this carries on through the summer then we will potentially have drastically reduced crops."
Norfolk branch CLA member, Chris Allhusen, from Bradenham Hall Farms near Dereham, added: I am delighted to say we have had 30mm of recent rain, so what immediate effect there may have been has gone. However, I doubt it will have any effect on the more long term situation and the threat of a summer drought. We already have agreed to a 20 percent restriction on our abstraction, and there may well be more."
