EASTERN REGION CANDIDATE FOR HUMAN HISTORY IN A HUNDRED ARTEFACTS

Six thousand years old – will this do?

Invited to choose an object for 'Human History in a Hundred Artefacts', the BBC's epic project 'A History of the World', Nicola Currie, CLA eastern regional director selected a Neolithic axe head 6000 years old. It was found by her son when he was potato-picking.

"The Swiss army knife of its time," she says. "6000 years ago this was cutting edge technology. Finely worked by flaking off chips of flint to give a razor sharp edge and perfectly balanced for precision use it is just five inches long.

"Recent analytical work has shown that the part of the brain that is used to create such a tool is also the part which is used for speech so the mind that could shape a flint axe could also shape a sentence. This tool represents a turning point in human history."

The hundredth item has yet to be selected by the project organisers who want people to come up with an item which they feel epitomises our own era. Nicola selected a carbon calculator such as the one found at www.cla.org.uk/CALM . This tool helps to calculate and manage greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, which are contributing to climate change. "Climate change is the great challenge of our time managing it will be as significant as mastering flint knapping was for the Stone Age," she says.
