CLA traveller advice pays off for North Norfolk landownerA North Norfolk landowner has thanked rural membership body, the CLA, for its advice on dealing with travellers setting up home on his land.Michael Gurney who farms just outside Cromer at Northrepps noticed that a small travellers' encampment had been set up on his farm land last week. Mr Gurney said: "I had already printed the CLA's guidance notes after we had been warned to expect travellers moving up from Essex – and my farm gateway could not be blocked because of access requirements. I followed the CLA's advice to the letter, not only formally requesting the travellers to leave, but also having this witnessed and having the travellers' vehicles photographed. "I then officially asked the police to move them, again quoting the CLA's guidance, and reinforcing this with the fact that the encampment was on Entry Level Stewardship (ELS) registered land. The police did ask the travellers to move on - and they did that afternoon. "It helps that we have a local travellers' site which means there is a local alternative to move to." CLA East regional director Nicola Currie added: "Dealing with trespass has been an ongoing part of the CLA's work for many years, and we always keep abreast of developments to be able to keep our members better informed. "If we can learn from the experiences of others, then everyone benefits. Hopefully we will hear of more situations like this that have been resolved to everybody's satisfaction, and they might prove the most valuable feedback." |
