Price of food could spark fresh wave of rural crimeRural watchdog body, the CLA, believes that the high price of food could spark a fresh wave of rural crime. Farms have being targeted by thieves for their sheep, pigs, cattle and even bees. In the past year, there have been many incidents in the UK involving farm animals being stolen, costing farmers millions of pounds. Swans and carp have also been plundered from rivers and lakes for food. The most shocking incident involved the slaughter of a flock of sheep on a Northamptonshire farm last year. 26 animals were killed in a field between Culworth and Chipping Warden, by a gang believed to be supplying illicit meat on the black market. The brutal killings in June 2011 raised concerns to a new level and fears have grown for public health. Previously traced stolen animals have been found in illegal and makeshift slaughterhouses, often an old farm building or rented industrial space, where they are butchered without regard to health or hygiene controls. CLA regional director Nicola Currie said: "It is really frightening that some people are prepared to sink to this level because of the high value of meat. "The unstable economic climate has obviously encouraged criminal elements to look for new opportunities. "We urge shoppers, butchers and catering firms to be wary of cheap meat being sold from the backs of vans or at the door." |
