New Chairman for Suffolk CLAGraham Downing, a freelance writer, publisher and consultant specialising in country sports is the new chairman of the Suffolk branch of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA). Mr Downing, 57, from Chediston near Halesworth, has much work ahead over the next couple of years. Just some of his tasks will involve promoting sustainable fuels, safeguarding property rights, working to improve rural broadband and advocating local foods and services. He will be lobbying on coastal defence, encouraging rural diversification to create local jobs in the rural economy and working with Suffolk County Council on its green energy schemes. An experienced shooter and deerstalker, Mr Downing both writes about and provides advice on firearms legislation and shooting matters. He is a council member of the British Shooting Sports Council (BSSC), editor of the British Deer Society (BDS) journal, 'Deer', and a vice-president of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). He and his wife Veronica run a small farm at Chediston, which is managed for arable cropping, wildlife and conservation. They also have a small flock of Norfolk Horn sheep. Traditional farm buildings have been converted to premium office accommodation and premises for a centre where Veronica, an occupational therapist, advises on and supplies equipment for independent living for elderly and disabled people. |
