Eastern Region Response - Making Space for Water: Developing a new Government strategy for flood and coastal erosion risk management in England

Eastern Region Response - Making Space for Water: Developing a new Government strategy for flood and coastal erosion risk management in England Defra's Making Space for Water seeks stakeholders views about ways in which flood hazards can be managed by allowing flooded rivers to cover farmland and seawater to flood over land that adjoins the coast, mainly in the south and southeast of England. The CLA is concerned that the consultation paper appears to give more weight to creation of wildlife habitat than it does to protection of people and their property. Allowing rivers to flood and seawalls to fall into disrepair, does not create good habitats. It costs money to protect the coast, but it is also expensive to create good salt marsh habitats. Farmers and land managers have a very positive role to play in designing spaces for flood water and rising sea levels, but they must be fairly rewarded for their contribution toward providing wider social and environmental benefits.
