Food to get your teeth into

I was delighted by the announcement last week that the Government is to introduce a supermarket ombudsman.

This is something that the CLA has been lobbying on for some time and it is excellent news that the Government will be implementing the CLA’s recommendations.

Whilst the agricultural industry is of course dependent on the supermarket sector, many large retailers can impose unrealistic conditions on smaller suppliers who are expected to carry a disproportionate share of the risks and costs. The ombudsman should work to protect producers and suppliers from these restrictive practices.

Now that this announcement has been made, we need to ensure that it makes a real difference to rural businesses. This watchdog must have teeth, but it must also be willing to use them and be allowed to do so.

Well done the CLA- this might finally make the supermarkets pay attention to their suppliers, who have been treated so badly for so long.
